Major Developments in Pakistan's IT and Telecommunication Sector
Islamabad, Web Desk - In a significant
announcement, Dr Umar Saif, the Caretaker Federal Minister for IT and
Telecommunication, disclosed that Starlink, Web1, and PayPal are set to launch
their services in Pakistan. The unveiling of the National Space Policy,
approved by the cabinet, has paved the way for commercial satellite
communication businesses to deploy low-orbit satellites, revolutionizing
internet services across the country, particularly in remote areas.
Starlink's Anticipated Entry into Pakistan's Satellite Services Market
Elon Musk's Starlink, after years of
delays, is poised to be the first company to introduce satellite services in
Pakistan, capitalizing on the newly established space policy. The policy
requires all international companies, including Starlink, to obtain a license
from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and a no-objection certificate
from the Strategic Plans Division to offer satellite communication services.
Government's Move to Regulate Space Sector and Boost Economy
Addressing the economic impact, the
government estimates an annual loss of $40 million due to the unregulated space
sector. The new space policy aims to rectify this by allowing international
players to contribute to the satellite communication landscape, fostering
economic growth.
Facilitating Freelancers with PayPal Integration
Dr Umar Saif highlighted that PayPal's
collaboration has enabled freelancers to remit their payments through
intermediaries. While PayPal is not establishing direct operations in Pakistan,
an arrangement has been made to transfer remittances from PayPal through a
third party. The official launch ceremony is scheduled for Jan 11, offering
freelancers a legal and cost-effective method to receive their remittances,
contributing to the growth of IT exports.
Strategic Initiatives for Tech Development
In a bid to position Pakistan as a "tech destination," the IT ministry has implemented a standardized quality test for IT graduates and introduced installment plans for mobile phones. Furthermore, the establishment of 10,000 e-Rozgar centers nationwide aims to provide enhanced facilities for freelancers and startups, fostering a conducive environment for technological innovation.
